CREATIVE SPOTLIGHT: Roger Taylor

It takes a lot of talented people working in collaboration to make a film like STAND, and this week we're spotlighting the work of Roger Taylor and his numerous contributions to the expanding 'Verse through ship design.  If you've ever explored the fan base of ships made for the Verse (and for the gaming communities that love Firefly), then you've come across Roger's work.

Roger has agreed to let the team at STAND expound upon a few of his ship designs for the project.  He's given us unfettered access to some of our personal favorites from his collection and we've started with the Quail.

The Quail was created during one of the many 'ship challenges' issued to gaming fans several years back, and it instantly became a favorite, not because it's a sleek, dependable little ship, but because it isn't.  It's a 'What a piece of junk!' kind of ship that people can't seem to help loving, so it was our very first pick for fan additions to STAND.

We'll post more about the Quail as Andrew reveals his new digital designs based on Roger's work, but you can find the writeup for the Quail (along with other designs under the name 'selek') in the Cortex Shipyards volumes 1 through 3.  Look for them online.

STAND SHIP CONTEST

STAND is in the final stages of post-production and the creative team behind the film would like to offer one of our fans (or a collaborative group of fans) the opportunity to showcase a little fan aerospace engineering.

Have you ever wanted to design a ship for the Rim?  Are you anxious to see that idea fully fleshed out in beautiful CGI?  Would you like an accompanying ship's logo and some official papers?  Well, now's your chance to enter our STAND Ship Contest.

To enter, please create a sketch of your vessel.  This can be any original shape or design for a vessel about the size of Firefly or smaller.  Something that could run blockades or pull a train job.  Please provide as many angles as possible so that we understand where you're going with the overall look.  The less details you provide, the more we'll have to make stuff up, so if you have specifics, get them down on paper.  We'll take anything from pencil drawings to CGI.

We would also like a writeup about the ship's class, speed, engine types etc.  Whatever you can provide, we'll try to include in the finished design and paperwork.  The more we know, the more we'll try to make.

Once we have a number of designs, we'll announce our chosen favorite and begin mocking it up to appear briefly in the film.  We'll also make it available publicly with your work properly cited and show the design process about your ship in an 'extra' from the STAND project.  Some of the designs we don't choose may still end up being seen in some special features, so start your engines and hit those proverbial drawing boards.

The contest starts now and ends on August 1, 2013.  After that we'll keep you updated about the ship's progress.

This is an example of the CGI work that you can expect from STAND.

RENDERS IN A DAY OR TWO

I ended up having to work last Saturday, so I wasn't able to get as much done as I would like. I need to finish modeling a section on the back side (not shown in the previous renders) and then I'll get new renders up (in a day or two). I just purchased three programs that are going to make creating textures for all of the objects a whole lot easier. I'll be able to get the finished assets done a lot quicker and post images of them.

WORK ON THE BAR MOVES FORWARD

I know it might not seem like it, because there haven't been any recent posts, but I continue to work on the Bar 3D project. It's a bit difficult to have dedicated time other than my weekends. I'm hoping to have renders up soon showing more detail with a textured version probably after this next weekend. Hang in there and you'll see more soon.

FIRST LOOK - BOOTS AND SADDLES 3D MODEL

Here's a first look at the bar in 3D. It's still a work in progress. A more detailed version will be up soon, followed by a textured one (looks much more impressive). This will at least give you an idea of how it's going to look. It will be a night shot, so the building will be illuminated in various ways. There will also be various surrounding outbuildings and environment details. A couple of ships will be parked outside and the such...

BOOTS AND SADDLES BAR - 3D PROGRESSION

It's fairly hard to complete a project when you're putting in long hours at a regular job, but I work on it when I can. I put in a couple of hours each night and it is really coming along nicely. Renders of the bar will be up soon. I should be able to get a good chunk of it done this weekend as well.
